Dennis Perrin with his unprecendented The Perrin Method™ is happy to announce
Painting from the Inside Out: A Journey in Self Discovery
Master Painter Dennis Perrin, recognized as one of this generations' leading painters, leads you through his patented method of painting step-by-step, with a calm, soothing demeanor, allowing you to easily explore one of the most interesting and captivating of all artistic subjects.
Most artists focus on their physical materials and techniques in order to accomplish their paintings.
Painting from the Inside Out points the artist in the direction of their true leverage, which is their ability to think and feel their way to a satisfying and successful painting.
In this course, Dennis teaches the painter how to create a personal vision for their work and to achieve that vision, not just through the physical materials but also by tapping into their unlimited potential.
Through high quality live & recorded video and in the moment narration, Perrin will share live demonstrations direct from his studio.
This course will allow you, the artist, to discover the true source of your creative genius by taking your focus off individual paintings and placing it on to you, the creator of the paintings.
Paintings flow from you, so working on you produces a higher order of satisfaction and success.
The Quiet Mind
Painting with a “quiet” mind allows the artist to truly see into the subject and then translate that vision into paint. The quiet mind sees only abstract shapes of value and color that are not sullied or influenced by pre-assigned names or categories.
Names of “things” and “colors” result in uni-dimensional, “stick-figure” shorthand versions, and obscure the ability to discern the actual relationships present in the subject. The quiet mind is obtained through the combination of meditation and intentional practice. Meditation allows one to feel what the quiet mind feels like.
This can then carryover to the practice of quieting the mind during the painting process. Eventually, mastery over the mind’s activities (or lack of activity) will give the artist the freedom to listen to external music or talk without distraction, and to eventually be able to talk themselves while painting, since painting becomes an intuitive, non-linguistic activity and is not disturbed by conversation.
The Power of Intention
Putting intention into your work all the way from the first thoughts until the final brushstroke is a powerful step toward successful and satisfying painting. Also, putting an intention into every application of paint during the physical painting process.
Meditating daily helps in finding that “sweet spot” where the idea of expressing yourself in paint feels really good. This is a progressive, practiced internal activity that allows the practitioner to move from an emotionally desensitized state to one of heightened sensitivity to emotions.
So often the painter is consumed with “details” of a subject, the “specifics.” This is tantamount to looking at the side of the road while driving 70 mph, where the feeling is hectic and out of control, as opposed to staying focused on the horizon and the road ahead, where the feeling is slow and easy. Stay focused on the “road ahead” (the big, general, simple shapes) and everything about your process will feel relaxed and easy.
Moving from General to Specific
The creative process has a very defined shape, always moving from general toward specific. Everything is created this way, and a painting is no exception. That’s why the focus has to be on the large, simple, foundational, underlying shapes. The details will then fit logically into this structure, which is composed primarily of value relationships that are also influenced by color and temperature.
From Master Painter Dennis Perrin
"I encourage my students to first practice visualizing the finished painting in their mind’s eye before they even touch a brush or paint. In fact, we often begin our classes with a guided meditation that encourages them to “see” the finished painting.
I then invite them to step slightly back and see that the painting is mounted on their easel, just below is their palette covered in swirls of paint, with brushes and paraphernalia nearby. I also invite them to “see” their own hand and to realize that they are the artist that created this painting.
Through this process, the student enters the role of being the creator of this work and sets the stage for them to now “allow” the painting to come into being in real, physical terms. This simple but powerful shift takes the painting process to a whole new level!"
Listen to Dennis talking about this new course and how it can benefit you:
"You only have available to you some simple materials: paint in tubes, a palette, brushes, a painting ground like canvas or gessoed panel, and two dimensions. Yet, with these limited materials, and a profound understanding of the importance of value, abstraction, and the relationships of abstract value shapes, you can create vibrant, shimmering, powerful paintings that beam with the illusion of light."
– Dennis Perrin
What to expect?
As always, there will be live demonstrations throughout the course, with special emphasis on the "thinking and feeling" process that goes on behind the scenes. We will also be taking the Live Q & A sessions into a new realm, treating them more like "coaching" sessions that simplify questions and answers. There will also be extensive homework assignments with the intention of cultivating a refined sense of self and our relationship to the creative process.
Each live lesson will be fully narrated and streamed through a private Facebook group. Once registered, you will be given a link to the page to request membership in the group. Once you’re accepted, you will be able to watch all live events through the page, as well as gain access to all recorded events and other posts.
All live events are recorded and available for unlimited viewing, at any time.

About Master Painter Dennis Perrin
Dennis Perrin can best be described as a painter of light as it illuminates and describes the subject. Mr. Perrin always chooses to paint in front of the subject, not content to settle for photography or video as painting material. Dennis has been called an American Impressionist Painter in the Boston School tradition, and that is not surprising since among his greatest influences are the American Painters John Singer Sargeant, Edmund Tarbell, and Frank Benson, as well as the French painter Henri Fantin-Latour. Other major influences have been Diego Velasquez, Johannes Vermeer, Thomas Dewing, Maxfield Parrish, Joseph DeCamp, and so many others.
A former member of the Guild of Boston Artists, Mr. Perrin paints in order to express his great love for the beauty seen all around, especially in his immediate environment. Dennis studied at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Art with M. Dell Weller, who taught him the power of seeing and translating that vision into paint. He continues his studies exploring the subtleties of light through paint. Among his favorite subjects are the human figure, clothed and nude, flowers, still life, and the interior space, often populated with one or more figures. Though not as frequently seen in his work, Perrin is an avid plein air painter of the New England landscape.

Hear from the students of The Perrin Method:
"There is no doubt that learning the Perrin Method has improved my painting skills . The calm manner of presentation, visualization and reflective thoughts of our instructor have led me to a higher level on the 'reason' why I want to paint and gives me determined purpose to continue to learn and to grow. I have enjoyed this plein air experience immensely. I felt like I was right there with you at the pond and watching Aimee chase squirrels at the park. Besides the technical aspects of the course, it was the genuine camaraderie that uplifted my spirits and gave me that eagerness to learn more and put it into action. I was not able to get outdoors as much as I would have liked but there are days and months ahead with plein air from my window. Blessings to all of you.” - D.H.
"Dennis, This course (and the other one I took) have been amazing. I've learned so much, changed so much, love the water soluble oils, changed my whole studio set up, the way I think about painting, etc. Can't thank you enough and everyone who participates as well. So much gratitude." - K.L.
"So excited to be back! I'm a little behind, seeing I was a little late in signing up. And once again Dennis, you never disappoint. So much to learn from you. Very happy to join you all. Actually this painting is one that was done a little earlier but with the Perrin Method. It's HOT HOT HOT here in Texas but I'm very excited to get out there. Might have to paint in the backyard with a fan blowing! Love seeing all the work you all are sharing.” - B.B.
